I set it up on your own mobile number for plumbers and sparkies on Sydney's Northern Beaches and North Shore. You get the job, the suburb and how urgent it is by text.
A few quick questions. No payment until it works on your phone.

Their phone. Your phone.

Caller: Dee Why
Harbour Plumbing: Got it. Does it need someone today, or can it wait a few days? Reply STOP to opt out.
Caller: Today if you can, there's water on the laundry floor
Harbour Plumbing: And when's a good time to call you back? Reply STOP to opt out.

How it works
Four steps, and you only do the first one.
1
You miss a call
Calls you don't answer go to a number I set up for your business. Calls you pick up don't change.
2
They hear from you
A text: "Sorry I missed your call, it's Dave from Harbour Plumbing. Is this about a job?" An AI receptionist that answers instead is in pilot, with limited spots.
3
It asks what you'd ask
The job, the suburb, how soon, and a good time to call back. If it's your mum or a supplier, they say so and it stops there.
4
You get the job by text
Burst pipes, no power and gas smells come through marked URGENT straight away. Nothing is booked until you say yes.
Who's behind it
Righto is a small Sydney business. I set up every number myself, I ring you before anything goes live, and you deal with me after that, not a call centre.
In pilot, limited spots, taking expressions of interest. The plan: an AI assistant answers the calls you can't, says it's an AI, takes the job and checks with you before anything is booked.
A$300 setup on either plan. No GST is charged. I'm not registered for GST, so the price you see is the price you pay. Want your Google Business Profile tidied up too? A$249 one-off, only if you want it.
Once your number's ready I text you the code with it filled in. You dial it like a phone number. To test it, ask a mate to ring you and let it ring out.
Turn it on (I send you yours)
**004*<your number from me>#
Turn it off: Telstra or Vodafone
##004#
Turn it off: Optus
##002#
Check it's on
*#61#
If the first code doesn't take, I'll send the one for your carrier. Turning it off also switches off voicemail forwarding, so switch your voicemail back on after (Telstra: **004*101#).
Questions
What tradies ask first.
Will my mum get texted?
No, not if she's on your skip list. When I ring to set you up, I take the numbers of family, mates and suppliers, and you can add more in the app any time. Anyone else gets a plain first text: "Sorry I missed your call, it's Dave from Harbour Plumbing. Is this about a job?" If they say no, it stops there and they go on your skip list. The same number won't be texted twice in two weeks.
Do I keep my number?
Yes. Nothing is ported. Your number, phone, carrier and plan stay the same. It uses call forwarding, a standard setting on Australian mobiles, so only the calls you don't answer come to me.
What if I'm on a job?
That's what it's for. Let it ring, or hit decline, and the call comes to me. If you ring the caller back yourself while it's still texting them, reply "ok" to the alert and it goes quiet.
What does the customer see?
A text from an Australian mobile number set up for your business. It has your first name and business name and ends with "Reply STOP to opt out." If they ask whether it's automated, they're told yes.
Is it legal?
It's set up to follow the rules that apply to it. It only texts people who have just called you, and only about their call. No marketing. Every text says who it's from and how to opt out, and a STOP reply works straight away. The AI receptionist pilot is designed to say it's an AI in its first sentence and ask before recording.
Does it work with my phone?
Yes, on any mobile on Telstra, Optus or Vodafone, iPhone or Android. Some prepaid plans only let you forward to voicemail, so I check your plan before you pay anything. On iPhone, turn off "Silence Unknown Callers" or those calls won't reach me.
No payment now. I ring on business days, Monday to Friday 9am to 8pm and Saturday 9am to 5pm, never Sundays or public holidays. On the call I go through your hours and the numbers you never want texted, then send you one code to dial. You pay once it's working on your phone.
